Fast Cars and Happy Lives

Hey! My name is Erica. I live for one thing and one thing only - driving my car. I have always loved cars so I was super excited when I passed my driving test last year. I decided that I needed to learn everything I could about the world of automobiles so I went down to my local auto club and made some friends. The guys there were really friendly and they took the time to talk about every aspect of owning, modifying, and maintaining a vehicle. I have learnt so much over the past few months, I just had to start a new blog. Enjoy!

Which Car Safety Features Do You Really Need?

by Roy West

When it comes time to buy a used car, you want to ensure you get the best bang for your buck. With the overwhelming number of safety features available on cars these days, which ones are the most important while you are out on the road? As a car owner who has not bought a new car in a decade, you are feeling overwhelmed with the safety feature terminology you see while browsing used car ads. This is a breakdown of three common safety features, so you can decide which features you need most in your next vehicle.

Lane Assistance

Have you ever been driving on the motorway and heard the rumble of your tires crossing the audible dot strips? These strips are in place to alert a driver that they have crossed out of their lane and into the edge of the road. You then correct your steering before leaving the road completely. A lane assistance alert does the same thing, but it does it when you wander out of your own driving lane and into the one next to you. This feature is particularly useful to people who drive long distances and may suffer from driver fatigue.

Reverse Camera

Each year, approximately seven Australian children are killed in driveway accidents. These accidents happen when young children rush behind a reversing car and cannot be seen by the driver because they are in the mirror's blind spot. A reverse camera shows what is directly behind the car so you can check no children are there before you begin reversing. Additionally, an alert tone sounds if anything crosses the camera path once your vehicle starts to move so that you can hit the brakes if necessary. This feature is useful to all drivers who have young families.

Forward Collision Warning

One of the most common accidents on Australian roads is rear-ending the car in front of you. If you are following a vehicle which brakes suddenly and you have not left enough distance between your vehicles, then you collide with the rear of their vehicle. Forward collision warning sounds an alert tone if the vehicle in front of you has stopped and you have not yet applied your brakes to slow your vehicle. In some vehicle models, the car applies its brakes for you so as prevent a collision. This feature is useful for people who drive a lot in stop/start heavy traffic.

Now that you know a little more about safety features in cars, have a chat with your used car salesman to see which ones you can get based on the budget you have to spend.
